We present a measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production using an integrated luminosity of 1.09/fb collected with the CMS detector. Top quark pairs with a signature of one electron or muon and four or more jets, at least one of them b tagged, are selected. At LHC a small charge asymmetry in the rapidity distributions of top and antitop quarks is predicted. Therein slightly broader rapidity distributions for top quarks are expected, while antitop quarks are produced more centrally and possess narrower rapidity distributions. We determine the charge asymmetry based on two different sensitive variables and the results are compared with the most precise standard model theory predictions using a dedicated unfolding technique.

Poster This poster attempts a preliminary foray into demonstrating the method of reading as a philosophical, historicizing, and interpretive tool in the phenomenology of particle physics. Reading as is explored here is not about how physicists read reports, scientific publications or their notes in furtherance of the production and publication of new science, but is about how reading as an act is inextricably linked with understanding one’s perspective and the ideology one is immersed in, thus influencing how discovery is made and articulated through theory-construction. Reading is both an act of cognition as well as of affective response between the physicist and the selection of subatomic world-trails he/she tracks. This affective connection is mediated as much by methodological choice as by the dominant paradigms that facilitate the reading, leading to the final interpretation. Reading is not an anthropomorphic prerogative but is performed by machines. Studying the different ways reading as performed by the machine gives us insight into the different forms of reading involved in knowledge production, especially reading as an engagement with the abstract and highly symbolic narrative of the universe. It is hope that in the process of understanding how intrinsic and embedded reading is in epistemic-construction, and therefore, in understanding the ontology of the real and physical, that the act and method of reading can be advanced as a medium/tool for rigorous interdisciplinary exploration. The poster has divided reading into ontological reading and epistemological reading, with two examples representing the entanglement of these two categories: mathematical-symbolic reading and machine reading.
