Description

The XLIIIrd Rencontres de Moriond session devoted to ELECTROWEAK INTERACTIONS AND UNIFIED THEORIES will be held in La Thuile from Saturday March 1st to Saturday March 8th, 2008. La Thuile is a pleasant winter sport resort located in the Italian Alps, at 1450 m alt., about 120 km from Geneva. The nearest international airport is Geneva (Switzerland). If you arrive in Geneva International Airport, do not forget that you* may need a transit visa, coming through Switzerland to Italy.

Since its foundation in 1966 by Jean Tran Thanh Van, the Rencontres de Moriond bring together theorists and experimentalists for in-depth discussions on recent findings and new ideas in elementary particle physics in a pleasant, relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

The meeting is intended to promote fruitful collaboration between experimentalists and theorists and between various institutions by bringing together a limited number of physicists and astrophysicists in beautiful and inspiring surroundings.

This session is devoted to electroweak interactions and to unified theories.

We present here searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson at high mass. We show results of the searches in two channels, H->WW->lnulnu and WH->WWW(*)->lnulnu+X. The data were collected with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Tevatron collider at Fermilab, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.1-2.4 fb^-1. In the absence of signal we set limits on the cross section in units of the Standard Model cross-section. For m_H=160 GeV, the observed 95% C.L. is 1.4 times the Standard Model prediction while the median of the expected limit is 1.9.

We update the constraints from electroweak precision data on new leptons and scalars that can give Majorana masses to light neutrinos. The allowed mixings and couplings are large enough to make these particles observable at LHC, as long as an extra symmetry suppresses their contributions to light neutrino masses.

With a few months before the LHC start-up, the commissioning of ATLAS is at its last stage while the last components of the detector are installed. The knowledge acquired during the preparation phase is presented as well as the expected performances at start-up. The strategies of both ATLAS and CMS regarding the use of early data involving leptons is then described. Assuming an integrated luminosity of 100pb-1 in 2008, examples of calibration procedures and early measurements are given.

With the first collisions from the LHC in sight, the CMS experiment has entered the final stage of commissioning. Nearly all of the detectors have been installed in the experiment and the last heavy structure of CMS was lowered into the experimental hall in January 2008. The CMS collaboration has launched a series of combined data-taking exercises, so-called Global Runs, with increasing scope and complexity during the past 10 months. More and more components have been integrated with the trigger and DAQ systems, and data from cosmic muons as well as high-rate random triggers have been used to prove readiness for LHC collisions. Physicists from ATLAS and CMS are taking care that the experiments will make the best use of the early data to align and calibrate the detectors. Analyses are prepared to study and optimize the performance of the triggers and of physics objects, such as jets, missing transverse momentum and photons. The strategies range from energy balancing to exploiting well-known standard model (SM) signatures. Already the first 10 to 100 pb^-1 of recorded data will allow QCD measurements with minimum-bias events and will open the window to the top-quark, Z and W Boson production. This presentation gives the status and history of the CMS commissioning, together with selected results from cosmic-muon data. The second part focuses on strategies for optimizing the reconstruction of jets, missing transverse energy and photons for early SM measurements at ATLAS and CMS.

We outline the expected sensitivity of the discovery for SUSY and Higgs on the first few fb-1 operation of LHC. We also briefly introduce the global strategy for finding the SUSY particles, and proposed background estimation methods by data-driven analysis. This report contains both results from ATLAS and CMS experiments. With a few fb-1 data, both experiments will find SUSY particles over wide range of the SUSY parameters, and possibly discover the SM Higgs boson in the first few year operation of LHC.

It is hoped that new physics beyond the standard model, such as supersymmetry, will solve some of the problems with the standard model. In this talk I will describe searches for various new physics models at the Tevatron in lepton final states. Signatures with leptons in final state tend to be cleaner and with low backgrounds from standard model. The searches I describe, for example a chargino/neutralino search or searches for new gauge bosons use up to 2 inverse femtobarns of proton-antiproton collisions.

In the general framework of phenomenological KKLT-like models in supergravity setup, I will talk about the case where the uplift to a Minkowski vacuum is provided by a Fayet-Iliopoulos sector in the presence of an extra anomalous U(1) symmetry. The modulus contribution to supersymmetry breaking is larger than in the models already present in the literature and a new mixed gauge-gravity mediation appears in some explicit examples. This provides an original phenomenology in principle testable at LHC, where the whole superpartner spectrum can be efficiently compressed at low-energy and sleptons are generically heavier than squarks.

I discuss a class of models with extra dimensions that combines warped geometry of the Randall-Sundrum type and a discrete symmetry called the Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity. These models may address the little hierarchy problem present in the conventional Randall-Sundrum set-up. Moreover, the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle (LKP) is stable and can play the role of dark matter. Collider signals of the warped KK parity are different from either Randall-Sundrum without KK parity, or from Universal Extra Dimensions.

Supergravity was once viewed as a possible solution to the ultraviolet problem of quantum gravity, but subsequent experience dampened the enthusiasm for this possibility, yielding instead to the expectation that only superstring theory can give an acceptable quantum theory. Recent advances in computation, however, raise once more the question whether the maximal N=8, D=4 supergravity might in the end be an ultraviolet theory. We will discuss the possibilities, making particular reference to the related ultraviolet structure of super Yang-Mills theory in various higher dimensions.

The precise determination of CP violation in the B meson system has been one of the goal of particle physics in the last decade. The Standard Model description of the CP violation phenomenology has been proved to be successful by accurate measurements using $B^+$ and $B^0$ decays at the B factories. So far, comparable experimental knowledge in the $B_s$ sector has been lacking, but the experiments at Tevatron collider, CDF an D0, are now providing experimental results capable to set bounds on the New Physics presence. This talk will review the present status of mixing and CP violation observables in the $B_s$ system, measured at Tevatron."

We present a measurement of the top quark mass employing the template method with data samlpe collected by the CDF Run II detector corresponding to integrated luminosity of 2fb^-1. Lepton+Jets and Dilepton final states are selected. For each event in the Lepton+Jets channel we apply kinematic constraints on the pair of top quarks and their decay products to determine a reconstructed top quark mass. We simultaneously determine the invariant mass of the decaying W boson to calibrate the energy response of the detector. The events in the Dilepton sample are reconstructed using the Neutrino Weighting Algorithm, where integration over undetermined kinematic variables is necessary due to presence of two neutrinos in the event. To improve the precision, for each Dilepton event we calculate Ht - the linear sum of missing transverse energy and transverse momenta of jets and leptons The reconstructed top quark mass and W boson invariant mass distributions from the Lepton+Jets channel and reconstructed top quark mass and Ht distributions from the Dilepton channel are fit to Monte Carlo derived templates in a likelihood fit to extract the top quark mass and an in-situ measurement of the jet energy scale. We measure Mtop=171.9+/-2.0 GeV/c^2.

The SuperNEMO project requires high radiopurity levels of the 2beta source foils: 10 uBq/kg in 214Bi and 2 uBq/kg in 208Tl. Today, best detectors can't reach these levels for big masses in a reasonable time. That's why the collaboration decided to build a dedicated detector for these measurements. Looking for BiPo processes (beta decay + delayed alpha decay) the BiPo detector has to measure these radiopurity requirements for 10 m2 of 40 mg/cm2 selenium foils (4 kg) in a month. The modular BiPo1 prototype, dedicated to background studies, started in June 2007 and is completed since February 2008. BiPo1 demonstrated the feasibility of the measurement and gave a very good preliminary sensitivity : A(208Tl) < 7.5 uBq/kg for a total BiPo detector.

A search for the standard model Higgs boson has been performed in 2.1 fb-1 of p_pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab TeVatron. The final state considered is a pair of acoplanar b jets, as expected from the reaction p_pbar->HZ->bbnunu. The search is also sensitive to the HW->bblnu, when the charged lepton is not identified. Boosted decision trees were used to discriminate the signal from the backgrounds. Since no deviation was observed, limits were set at 95% C.L. on the cross section times branching ratio of pp_bar->H(Z/W)x(H->bb) .

We investigate the leading one-loop Yukawa corrections to the process $pp -> b\bar{b}H$ in the SM. We find that the NLO correction to the cross section is about $-4\%$ if the Higgs mass is $120$GeV. In the limit of vanishing bottom-Higgs Yukawa coupling the cross section is generated solely at the loop level. This contribution is very small at $M_H\sim 120$GeV and increases with growing Higgs mass, reaching about $+17\%$ of the cross section when the Higgs mass is about $150$GeV. The leading Landau singularity occurs in a scalar box integral if $M_H > 2M_W$.

The KLOE detector is operated at DA$\Phi$NE, an $e^+ e^-$ collider running at a center of mass energy $W = m_{\phi} \sim 1019.45$~MeV. $\phi$ mesons decay 34\% of the time to a $K_S K_L$ pair. Detection of a $K_L$ thus signals the presence of, tags'', a $K_S$ and vice versa. With this technique, we select a pure $K_S$ beam, which permits studies of suppressed $K_S$ decays without the overwhelming background from the $K_L$ component. We present the result of a search for the $K_S \to e^+e^-$ decay obtained from the whole data set. This is based on a sample of $\sim 650$ millions of $K_S$ decays tagged by the detection of a $K_L$ interaction in the calorimeter. $K_S \to e^+e^-$ decay is a $\Delta S = 1$ weak neutral current process, suppressed by Standard Model at the level of $\sim 2\times10^{-14}$. These events are searched by selecting two charged tracks from the interaction region, and exploiting the high resolution of our drift chamber in reconstructing the kaon invariant mass. Further rejection comes from calorimeter particle identification. No events survive our selection criteria, resulting in un upper limit on the BR of $9.3 \times 10^{-9}$,~at~90\%~CL.

We study different LFV processes, namely, $l_j \to l_i \gamma$, $l_j \to 3 l_i$ decays, $\mu-e$ conversion in nuclei and LFV semileptonic decays, within the context of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, enlarged by three right handed neutrinos and their supersymmetric partners, and where the neutrino masses are generated via a seesaw mechanism. Two different scenarios with either universal or non-universal soft supersymmetry breaking Higgs masses at the gauge coupling unification scale are considered. We analyse the relevance of the various parameters on the LFV rates, particularly emphasising the role played by the heavy neutrino masses, $\tan \beta$, and especially $\theta_{13}$. In the case of hierachical heavy neutrinos, an extremely high sensitivity of the rates to $\theta_{13}$ is indeed found. The last part of this work is devoted to the study of the interesting loss of correlation between some different channels that occurs in the non-universal scenario.

The HyperCP collaboration observed three events for the decay Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^-. They suggested that new physics may be required to understand the implied decay rate and the observed M_{mumu} distribution. Motivated by this result, we re-examine this mode. First within the standard model, and then assuming there is a new particle. Within the SM we find that Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^- is long-distance dominated and its rate falls within the range suggested by the HyperCP measurement. We then examine the conditions under which the observation is consistent with a light Higgs boson and find an explicit example that satisfies all the constraints: the light pseudoscalar Higgs boson in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, the A_1^0.

As it was recently realized, flavor effects in leptogenesis modify the established "unflavored" picture in many ways. One of them is the appearance of a link between low-energy CP violating phases and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. In particular, the only phase in the PMNS mixing matrix that one can hope to measure in the future, i.e. the Dirac phase, can be the unique source of CP violation necessary to explain the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. In the hierarchical limit for the heavy neutrinos, the Dirac phase can play this role, although the allowed parameter space is quite small and mainly in the weak wash-out, i.e. with dependence on the initial conditions. A way to overcome these difficulties is to go to degenerate heavy neutrinos. There, nice constraints involving low-energy parameters like \theta_13 and m_1 could be found from successful leptogenesis.

Unification of GUT-scale t-b-τ Yukawa couplings is a significant feature of simple SO(10) SUSY GUTs. We present the results of a search that used the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to investigate the special parameter space regions having both Yukawa unification and WMAPcompatible dark matter relic density. The regions having better than 10% Yukawa unification are characterized by a spectrum having 1st/2nd generation sfermions in the multi-TeV range, 3rd generation scalars in the TeV range, and gauginos in the ~100 GeV range, where however the DM relic density is high in most cases. For such solutions one can reduce the relic density either by allowing for neutralino decay to axino plus photon; by imposing gaugino mass non-universality or by imposing generational non-universality. For the other set of solutions found by the MCMC where DM relic density is already low, neutralino annihilation is seen to occur via the light Higgs resonance. Furthermore, one can impose weak scale Higgs soft term boundary conditions and achieve low μ, m_A solutions with neutralino annihilation via a light A resonance, which however are excluded by CDF/D0 measurements of the Bs → μ+μ- branching fraction. The requirements of Yukawa coupling unification and DM relic density lead to new physics signals at the LHC from pair production of 350-450 GeV gluinos. The events are characterized by very high b-jet multiplicity and a dilepton mass edge around neutralino 2 - neutralino 1 mass ~50-75 GeV.

A thorough analysis of sneutrinos as dark matter candidates is perfomed, in different classes of supersymmetric models, as is typically done for the neutralino dark matter. First in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, sneutrinos are marginally compatible with existing experimental bounds, including direct detection, provided they compose a subdominant component of dark matter. Then supersymmetric models with the inclusion of right-handed fields and lepton-number violating terms are presented. Simple versions of the lepton-number-violating models do not lead to phenomenology different from the standard case when the neutrino mass bounds are properly included. On the contrary, models with right-handed fields are perfectly viable: they predict sneutrinos which are compatible with the current direct detection sensitivities. I am going to show the indirect detection signals for such successful models: predictions for antimatter and neutrino fluxes are provided and compared with existing and future experimental sensitivities.

The effects of the lightest neutrino mass in flavoured'' leptogenesis are investigated in the case when the CP-violation necessary for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is due exclusively to the Dirac and/or Majorana phases in the neutrino mixing matrix U. The type I see-saw scenario with three heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos having hierarchical spectrum is considered. The orthogonal'' parametrisation of the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings, which involves a complex orthogonal matrix R, is employed. Results for light neutrino mass spectrum with normal and inverted ordering (hierarchy) are obtained. It is shown, in particular, that if the matrix R is real and CP-conserving and the lightest neutrino mass m_3 in the case of inverted hierarchical spectrum lies the interval 5 \times 10^{-4} eV < m_3 < 7 \times 10^{-3} eV, the predicted baryon asymmetry can be larger by a factor of \sim 100 than the asymmetry corresponding to negligible m_3 \cong 0. As consequence, we can have successful thermal leptogenesis for 5 \times 10^{-6} eV < m_3 < 5 \times 10^{-2} eV even if R is real and the only source of CP-violation in leptogenesis is the Majorana and/or Dirac phase(s) in U.

The \mu -> e \gamma and \tau -> l \gamma decay rates are evaluated in the framework of the seesaw model with triplets of fermions. We show that the observation of one of these radiative decays by the new planed experiments would contradict the bounds which arise in this model coming from \mu -> eee and \tau 3l decays, which is an interesting possibility to exclude the model.

The MINOS experiment is now making precise measurements of the $\nu_\mu$ disappearance oscillations seen in atmospheric neutrinos, and will extend our reach towards the so far unseen $\theta_{13}$ by looking for $\nu_e$ appearance in the $\nu_\mu$ beam. It does so by using the intense, well-understood NuMI neutrino beam created at Fermilab and observing it 735 km away at the Soudan Mine in Northeast Minnesota. Results from MINOS' first two years of operations will be presented.

A "Chameleon" is a force whose apparent range and strength can depend on the size and density of the source. I discuss how a U(1) gauge force can be chameleonic due to screening from a light charged scalar. Such screening can weaken astrophysical constraints on new gauge bosons, allow a B-L interaction to be strong enough to affect short baseline neutrino oscillations, and change the allowed regions of sterile neutrinos.

I review the interpretation of the LSND signal in terms of sterile neutrino oscillations in the light of MiniBooNE results, considering 1, 2, or 3 sterile neutrinos with eV scale masses. Borexino is a large volume, real-time, liquid scintillator detector located at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. The principal objective of the detector is to measure mono energetic (862 keV) Be-7 neutrinos from the sun present with a count rate of several tens of events per day. Measurement at this level requires an extremely low internal background due to natural radioactivity present in the detector components. In this talk Borexino's first results are presented and the detector is briefly described.

The observation of high energy neutrinos from cosmic objects is expected to bring us key information about the most energetic processes known in the universe, such as gamma ray bursts and events in the surroundings of supermassive black holes. Their observation could also help us to understand the mechanism for cosmic ray acceleration, a long-standing puzzle. High energy neutrinos may also elucidate the nature of the dark matter, via the observation of WIMPs annihilation into neutrinos. In recent years, several projects aiming at the observation of high energy neutrinos have been developed. The most ambitious, and most advanced of these is the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, currently under construction at the geographic South Pole. When completed in 2011, IceCube will consist of an instrumented ice volume of about one cubic kilometer, together with a surface air shower array of matching dimensions. Twenty two out of the eighty foreseen strings are already taking data and the first physics analyses using IceCube data are being developed within the collaboration. 18 strings deployed during this austral summer are under commisionning, bringing the detector to half of its final size. An overview of the motivations of high energy neutrino astronomy will be given, with special emphasis on expectations for IceCube. We will also present the status of the experiment and some recent results obtained with the 9-strings detector that was running in 2006.

Recent results obtained by the HARP collaboration on the measurements of the double-differential production cross-section of positive and negative pions in interactions of 3-12 GeV/c protons with nuclear targets from Beryllium to Lead are presented. They cover production at small angles (30-210 mrad) and relatively large momenta up to 8 GeV/c as well as large angles (0.35 - 2.15 rad) and small momenta (0.1 - 0.8 GeV/c). These results are relevant for detailed understanding of neutrino fluxes in accelerator neutrino experiments, better prediction of atmospheric neutrino fluxes, optimisation of a future neutrino factory design and for improvement of hadronic generators widely used by the HEP community in the simulation of hadronic interactions. To the latter, some comparisons of our data to the generators implemented in the Geant4 code are given.

A brief introduction to neutrino self-interaction effects in Supernovae (SN) is presented. In the extreme environment of core collapse SNe, the very large neutrino densities induce collective flavor transitions, different from the usual MSW neutrino oscillations in matter. In particular, self-interaction induced neutrino oscillations can be very important for inverted neutrino hierarchy mass, even for very small mixing angle, trough the split of neutrino and antineutrino spectra.

We discuss the prospects for detecting right-handed neutrinos which are introduced in the see-saw mechanism at future colliders. This requires a very accurate cancellation between contributions from different right-handed neutrinos to the light neutrino mass matrix. We search for possible symmetries behind this cancellation and find that they have to include lepton number conservation. Light neutrino masses can be generated as a result of small symmetry-breaking perturbations. The impact of these perturbations on LHC physics is negligible, so that the mechanism of neutrino mass generation and LHC physics are decoupled in general. In constrained cases, accelerator observables and neutrino masses and mixings can be correlated.

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of an LHC dipole. The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first preliminary results on the 2006 He4 data taking as well as the system upgrades to come in the next months with the expected sensitivities for the He3 data taking.

The set of quantum Boltzmann equations relevant for leptogenesis is derived using non-equilibrium quantum field theory. They manifest memory effects leading to a time-dependent CP asymmetry which depends upon the previous history of the system. This result is particularly relevant in resonant leptogenesis where the asymmetry is generated by the decays of nearly mass-degenerate right-handed neutrinos. The impact of the non-trivial time evolution of the CP asymmetry is presented either in the generic resonant leptogenesis scenario or in the more specific Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation framework. We show that significant quantitative differences arise with respect to the usual approach in which the time dependence of the CP asymmetry is neglected.

The measurement of the energy spectrum above $2.5\cdot 10^{18}$ eV at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. Above 20000 events of zenith angle less than $60^\circ$ have been recorded by the surface detector and the acceptance of 7000 km$^2$sr yr, achieved during the construction phase is larger than of previous experiments. The spectral features of the particle flux will be disscused. At high energies the flux is suppressed, the hypothesis of a single power-law behaviour as obtained in the lower energy range beeing rejected with a significance of more than 6 sigma.

The DM-TPC is an optical readout time projection chamber being developed by groups from Boston University, Brandeis University and MIT to search for dark matter. The device has the capability of measuring the properties of tracks of low energy particles, including ionization rate, true 2-dimensional projections on the readout plane with resolutions of the order of 100 microns, and the component of the trajectory perpendicular to the readout plane with a photomultiplier tube. The direction sensitivity of the device will reduce backgrounds to dark matter detection, and will enable properties of the dark matter "wind" to be measured, if/when dark mater is discovered.

The NEMO3 detector also allows to perform the measurement of the half-life of two-neutrino double beta decay for 7 isotopes. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay has been found, but a lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay can be obtained, and thus an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass.
