Invisibles 14 Workshop

The "Invisibles Workshop 14" is the third thematic workshop organised in the context of the FP7 funded INVISIBLES ITN (FP7-PEOPLE-2011-ITN, PITN-GA-2011-289442-INVISIBLES), which focuses on Neutrino, Dark Matter and Dark Energy phenomenology and their connection, and more in general on physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics.


The Workshop will be held at the "Institut des Cordeliers" in the centre of Paris (6th "arrondissement"), and follows the Invisibles 14 School.

This year's workshop topics include neutrino physics (theory, experiments and implications for astrophysics and cosmology), dark matter and dark energy, as well as LHC results. Several discussion sessions are scheduled, as are poster presentations.

17:30 Dark matter goes social: Impact on structure formation

We present our results studying the impact of DM‐photon and DM‐neutrino interactionsonthestructureformationinthelateUniversepotentiallysolving several problems of CDM and constraining the possible interaction strength. 17:30 Determination of mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number and effective electron density for zirconium borohydride and zirconium hydride

The effective atomic numbers ( ) and effective electron density ( ) of shielding materials such as borohybride zirconium and hybride zirconium have been calculated using the mass attenuation coefficients ( ) obtained via WinXCOM program at the photon energy range of 1 keV‐100 GeV. This work is concerned also with a calculation of macroscopic fast neutron removal cross‐sections ( ).The main objective of this paper is evaluating the kind of shield against gamma and neutrons rays. The results show that zirconium borohybride with low density and highest removal cross section is an excellent neutron shielding material and zirconium hybride with high density is a suitable shielding for radiation protection. Also, the attenuation of fast neutrons is more important in the first material than the second because it contains boron. Boron is unique in its ability to absorb thermal neutrons.

17:30 Explaining CoGeNT and DAMA with backgrounds

The CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA collaborations both claim possible evidence for light Dark Matter scattering in their detectors. For the former this is in the form of a low‐energy excess and for the latter an approximately 9.3 sigma evidence for an annual modulation. However the Dark Matter parameters favoured by these experiments are in tension with searches from e.g. LUX, XENON100 and SuperCDMS. We demonstrate that the low‐energy excess seen by CoGeNT is the result of surface events, and when these are correctly accounted for there is less than one sigma evidence for Dark Matter. We also explain the annual modulation seen by DAMA as resulting from neutrons produced by a combination of atmospheric muons and solar neutrinos scattering in the material around the detector. 17:30 Indirect detection of dark matter signatures at INO

Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs) are among the most favored dark n/a matter candidates. Their capture and subsequent annihilation at the center of Sun/ Earth may give rise to neutrinos, through various annihilation channels.We look at the possibility of detection of such neutrinos at INO (India‐Based Neutrino Observatory), which will house 50‐kt Iron Calorimeter (ICAL). With the detection of such neutrinos we can reconstruct the nature of dark matter. Based on work with Deepak Tiwari, Anushree Ghosh, Sandhya Choubey

17:30 Isospin-violating dark matter with colored mediators

In light of positive signals reported by the CDMS‐II Si experiment and the recent results of the LUX and SuperCDMS experiments, we study isospin‐violating dark matter scenarios assuming that the interaction of the dark matter is mediated by colored particles. We investigate the phenomenology of the model, including collider searches, flavor and CP phenomenology. A minimal possible scenario includes scalar dark matter and new vector‐like colored fermions with masses of O(1) TeV as mediators. Such a scenario may be probed at the 14 TeV LHC, while flavor and CP constraints are stringent and severe tuning in the couplings is unavoidable. We also found that, as an explanation of the CDMS‐II Si signal, isospin‐violating fermionic dark matter models with colored scalar mediators are disfavored by the LHC constraints. 17:30 Minimal theory for lepto-baryons and low scale unification

We define the simplest anomaly‐free theory where baryon and lepton numbers are defined as local symmetries spontaneously broken at the low scale which predicts the existence of lepto‐baryons. In this context it is possible to unify the Standard Model gauge interactions at the low scale in four dimensions in agreement with experiments. The cosmological implications and the possibility of lepto‐baryons as cold dark matter are briefly discussed. Based on work done with Pavel Fileviez Perez, Sebastian Ohmer, Hiren H. 17:30 On the renormalization of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian

We deal here with the off‐shell renormalization of the chiral effective Lagrangian for physics beyond the Standard Model, based on a non‐linear realization of the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry breaking in the presence of a light Higgs particle, up to four derivatives. We consider the full would‐be Goldstone bosons and Higgs sector of the Lagrangian. All one loop amplitudes are computed using dimensional regularization. Apparent chiral noninvariant divergences are encountered in the process. Nevertheless, they are non‐physical. We provide a method for the renormalization of these amplitudes off‐shell, which involves a redefinition of the would‐be Goldstone boson fields that includes space‐time derivatives and the Higgs field. 17:30 Ordered anarchy from a 5D SO(10)

mechanism to generate flavour hierarchy via 5D wave‐function localization is revisited in the context of SO(10) grand unified theory. An extra‐dimension compactified on an orbifold together with SO(10) breaking generates different zero‐mode profiles for fermions of different charges. Utilizing suitable scalar fields, a predictive model for fermion masses and mixing is constructed and shown to be viable with the current data through a detailed numerical analysis. All the Yukawa couplings in the model are of order unity while the hierarchies among different fermions result from wave‐function profiles. The naturalness of Anarchical Yukawa couplings is studied and the predictions for various observables in the lepton sector are also derived. The scalar field content of the model is suitable to solve the doublet‐triplet splitting problem through missing partner mechanism. Based on work done with F.Feruglio, K.Patel, D.Vicino

17:30 Search for a 4th neutrino with CeSOX

The CeSOX project aims at testing the reactor antineutrino and Gallium anomalies, which can be interpreted as oscillations of active neutrinos toward a fourth (sterile) neutrino species in the very short baseline regime. The CeSOX experimental concept consists in deploying an intense (3‐5 PBq) radioactive antineutrino source made of 144 Cerium, in the vicinity of the Borexino detector located at LNGS (Italy). The cerium will be extracted and isolated from spent nuclear fuel at the PA Mayak (Russia) facility. A shielding of tungsten heavy alloy ensures biological protection and a low background level during the experiment. In order to achieve the best sensitivity, precise knowledge of the antineutrino spectrum shape and rate are required. This poster intends give an overview of the project and its challenges and to present the last progress in the source readying. A particular focus is then put on the source characterization. 17:30 Supernova neutrinos

During a core collapse supernova, a vast amount of neutrinos are emitted from inside the supernova core. The high neutrino density allow for neutrino self interactions which affect the neutrino oscillations in a measurable way. This poster presents the general oscillatory behaviour of neutrinos propagating through a core collapse supernova pointing out certain specific effects due to self interactions. We will also see how the environment of the supernova affects the flavour dependent energy spectra of the neutrinos which have travelled through the star. Based on work done with J. Elevant
