Description
The HealthGrid conference takes place every year since 2003. Its aim is to gather all actors and players in the fiekd of healthgrid technologies and applications. In 2010, the conference will take place on the campus of Paris XI university in Orsay. Best french university in physics and mathematics according to the 2009 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, Paris XI university hosts leading laboratories in many fields of reseach on the largest university campus in France at the heart of the french silicon valley South West of Paris. The conference will take place at the Laboratoire de l'Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL), one of the largest laboratories of CNRS Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics and home of its Institut des Grilles.

Workshop: Life Science Virtual Research Community

This session is dedicated to a full afternoon workshop.
This workshop, organized by the HealthGrid association, intends to be a discussion forum on the future of the Life-Science grid community in Europe. It will consists of brief position presentations from representative of users and infrastructure providers of the field, followed by an open discussion. The workshop proposes to gather opinions and positions on the future of the LS community, related, but not limited to the following questions:
      • Do we need a European structure for grid-related Health and LS communities ?
      • What would be its role ?
      • Who would be the targeted user communities ?
      • What would be the supporting infrastructures ?
      • How would it be organized and how would it interact with the existing initiatives ?

Putting a Heart into a Box: GPGPU simulation of a Cardiac Model on the XBox 360 45m
When they first hit the market the current “next” generation of games consoles are, pretty much by definition, the most powerful “bangs per buck” computing hardware one can get, especially in terms of their graphical computing power and advanced GPUs. However, little work has been published which actually uses this power to produce useful research results. One exception is my recent paper using the XBox 360 to carry out electro-cardio dynamics simulations, recently published in the Computational Biology and Chemistry*. This I shall discuss in the broader context of using games consoles as an alternative HPC resource. I shall also discuss the wider publicity generated by this paper, and highlight how games could be a very powerful tool in the Public Engagement with Science arena. * Implications of the Turing Completeness of Reaction-Diffusion Models, informed by GPGPU simulations on an XBox 360: Cardiac Arrhythmias, Re-entry and the Halting Problem, S.Scarle, Computational Biology and Chemistry 33 253 (2009) Video presentation at: http://tinyurl.com/cpv3pc
