Local scientific (fun)-fact

Just 2 km from the Palais du Pharo stands a scientific landmark: the Marseille tide gauge, or marégraphe. Built in 1885, this historic instrument was designed to precisely measure sea level changes using self-recording gauges and mechanical floats. Remarkably, it is the last historical tide gauge still in operation, now complemented by modern sensors.

This site is more than just a curiosity — it's foundational. The marégraphe serves as the zero point from which all altitudes in mainland France (and even Switzerland) are measured. Inside the building, you’ll find the fundamental benchmark of the French continental levelling network: a small bronze rivet made from a platinum-iridium alloy.

Thanks to over a century of meticulous data collection, we know that the average sea level has risen by 16 cm over the past 140 years, a clear signal of global warming.
