The Sainte-Victoire mountain, near Aix-en-Provence, was immortalised by the painter Cézanne. Few people know that its foothills are rich in dinosaur fossils! Several thousands of fossilised eggs were discovered in the area, dubbed “Eggs-en-Provence” by foreign researchers. The 74 million-year-old site (late Cretaceous) has yielded bones from specimens of rhabdodon, a 3 to 4-metre-long herbivorous dinosaur, pyroraptor, a type of small, two-legged carnivore discovered following a forest fire, or Arcovenator escotae, a carnivorous hunter discovered during the construction of the A8 motorway by the Escota company.
