Summary

The “Transient Universe 2023” school will address the astrophysical topic of transient events in all its diversity, including photon and multi-messenger astronomy (radio, X and gamma rays, and gravitational waves). It will cover a wide variety of subjects ranging from the death of massive stars, supernova explosions and their remnants, accretion and coalescence of binary systems to relativistic jets in AGNs and gamma-ray bursts.

The school is addressed to Ph.D students, post-docs and young researchers, and brings together international experts from different domains in order to prepare the future generation of young researchers to the upcoming revolution of time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy.

Registration opens February 1, 2023 and closes March 15. The school takes place from May 30, 2023 to June 9 at the Institute for Scientific Studies (IESC) in Cargèse, Corsica (France), with on-site lunches and lodging.

School is about to start (Registration is of course closed)

(published 2023/5/22)

For the pick-up at the Airport in Ajaccio on 30/5, we schedule 2 busses:
- the cosmic bus, leaving after the arrival of the 14:45 plane
- a second minibus, leaving after the arrival of the 18:30 plane

Normally everybody has been informed by mail. If you did not get the confirmation Email, please contact the loc urgently.

Accepted participants / Registration Step2 is now Open

(published 2023/4/3)

The selection process after Step1 has been carried out by our SOC. The selection was not easy, we received about twice as many candidates as places. Accepted participants should have received the corresponding E-mail. Please follow the details in this E-mail. The further procedure is as follows:

  • go back to your registration on the website of the institute and enter your E-mail/password. Please provide there details about your booked flight, if you take the cosmic bus, and preferences for your stay. Please enter those details until April 16th.
  • go to the website AzurColloque provided in the acceptation E-mail you received, to initiate the payment of the registration fees. In a first step, you just have to create an account there. The payment is then due in a second step, until May 8th.
  • we will define a bit later who will give a talk (it will be a short communication, 10 min each, since here also we have many people interested in giving a talk).

Registration Step1 is now Closed

(published 2023/3/20)

The first step of the registration process is now closed. The selection of the participants of the school "The Transient Universe 2023" is currently ongoing.

Second Circular / Registration Step1 is Open

(published 2023/2/1)

The registration is now open for participants of the school "The Transient Universe 2023" to be held from 30 May to 9 June 2023 in Cargèse (please see details in the First Circular below).

Participants are invited to register on the following web site:

REGISTRATION

Registration to the school will be performed in two steps:

  • in a first step, you declare yourself candidate to participate to the school.
  • in a second step, your participation is confirmed by the LOC

At the first step:

  • you will be prompted to create your account on this site of the Cargèse institute. Please enter your first name (prénom) and your last name (nom de famille) and chose a password which is used specifically for this site. For students please select Quality "Auditor" (for lecturers which also need to register, please select "Lecturer").
  • for students, please upload a short CV to present yourself (in pdf format)
  • upload an abstract (a 2nd pdf, in the same uplaod box), if you would like to give a students talk presentation at the school (10 to 15 min max, depending on number of presentations received). Every student is encouraged to give a presentation, it's a nice non-stressful exercice to give a presentation in front of other students before doing so in a big conference.
  • upload a motivation letter (pdf), if you need a reduced attendance fee (a letter in which you explain why in your case you can not afford the full attendance fee)
  • click "Save Definitively" to submit your application.

At the second step, after acceptation of your application to the school by the LOC, you will be able to enter details of:

  • your arrival time and departure time. The students are requested to stay during the full period from 30 May to 9 June. Please note that there will be the "Cosmic Bus" from Ajaccio airport to Cargèse, scheduled in the afternoon of the 30 May (exact time To Be Confirmed). And the way back to Ajaccio the bus will depart the institute on 9 June at noon latest (exact time To Be Confirmed).
  • room and dietary constraints
  • and you will be asked for the payment of the attendance fee (payment details will be communicated later)

Looking forward to seeing you in Cargèse end of May 2023, during the most beautiful time of the year!

Stéphane Schanne on behalf of the LOC and SOC.

First Circular

(published 2022/12/1)

Scientific Rationale of the School:

Cosmic bursts are the most violent and energetic events detected in the Universe. These transient phenomena can be linked to the death of a star (supernova or gamma-ray burst), to accretion processes in a binary system hosting a compact object (neutron star or black hole), to the coalescence of two compact objects producing gravitational waves or to active galactic nuclei.

These violent phenomena, which are detected even at the far edge of the Universe and therefore originate from its earliest ages, are by nature brief and unpredictable. They are most often linked to high-energy astrophysical phenomena, in particular accretion and ejection of matter at relativistic speeds. They are naturally detected in the X and gamma-ray energy range, and historically have been studied mainly in this domain of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, nowadays it is known that a lot of information can be obtained from other spectral ranges (from radio to high-energy gamma rays via the visible band), but also from the so-called "new messengers", notably neutrinos or gravitational waves produced by large masses and high velocities involved in these astrophysical objects, and from cosmic rays resulting from particle acceleration.

In this context of "transient sky astronomy" new observational facilities are emerging (such as SVOM, CTA, SKA, LSST and in the future Theseus, eXTP and Athena) and a large amount of data from operational astrophysical observatories (Swift, XMM-Newton, INTEGRAL, NuSTAR, MAXI, Fermi, HESS II, Nicer, etc.) are available at the time of this school.

The school aims to bring together international experts in these fields to give the future generation of researchers an overview of these themes, which will shape the future of astrophysics.
The school is mainly addressed to PhD students, post-docs and young researchers, and will be limited to 60 participants. The school will present astrophysical objects from a theoretical and observational point of view, the physical processes of radiation, and the observational facilities available. Special emphasis will be put on hands-on sessions with data analysis.

This school follows the series of astrophysics schools organized at IESC Cargèse in 2006, 2013, 2016 and 2019.

Activities during the School:

  • lectures and interactive hands-on sessions (in english)
  • student presentations

Logistics/Venue:

The school will take place at the Scientific Institute in Cargèse, Corsica. Student-participants are requested to stay during to full duration of the school from 30th May and June 9th to ensure a fruitful venue.

The attendance fee is 700€ per participant (some students may have part of the fees supported by the school on request).

This attendance fee covers school logistics, lodging in double rooms on the site of the Institute in Cargèse or in the Cargèse village, breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks and bus transfer from and to Ajaccio, where the nearest airport is located. The transfer bus will be scheduled on 30th May and June 9th.

The Ajaccio airport is served from a number of French airports like Paris Orly, Paris CDG, Lille, Nice, Strasbourg and Marseille, and from some other European airports like Brussels, Basel, Oslo, and Rome Fiumcino. It is highly recommended to tune your travel schedule to take the Cosmic Bus, due to the sparse public transportations in Corsica. If you don't want to take the school bus, note that a taxi can be an expensive (> 100 €) alternative.
