Description

This event is sponsored by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule/Université Franco-Allemande

Dark matter is one of the great puzzles of nature: according to current estimates, more than 85% of the matter in the universe is in the form of dark (only gravitating) matter, of which today we know nothing. Any discovery of new physics will be related directly or indirectly to dark matter: by discovering a dark matter particle or by measuring fundamental properties in models providing a dark matter candidate. Dark matter is also likely related to gravitational waves and multi-messenger astroparticle physics.

The International Research Laboratory (IRL) DMLab between the CNRS/IN2P3 and the Helmholtz association represented by its centers DESY, KIT and GSI, focusses on the theme of dark matter.

To address various challenges in dark matter physics the IRL is structured in six topics: direct dark matter searches, multi-messenger particle physics and gravitational waves, novel accelerator concepts, computing and data science, particle detector technologies, and theoretical physics.

During the meeting we aim to discuss the ongoing projects as well as new ideas.

The first half-day will be co-organized with GDR DUPhy (Deep Underground Physics), a French research network (English-friendly) focused on underground physics, particularly the search for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. While registration with DUPhy is not required, you may find its program of interest. During this session, 10 students from the U.S. will attend. Their trip has been organized by the IRL PPC and funded by the FADEx (French American Doctoral Exchanges) program  « The Dark Side of the Universe ».

Search for Dark Matter with a 0.2ng TES Detector 20m
Orateur: Elmeri Rivasto (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY, Notkestr. 85, 22607 Hamburg, Germany)
Previous searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via nuclear recoils have significantly constrained the dark matter parameter space at masses above the GeV scale. Consequently, attention has recently shifted toward exploring light dark matter candidates, enabled by the rapid development of quantum technologies, particularly superconducting devices. Here, we present our recent proposal and initial experimental results on using a superconducting calorimeter, specifically a Transition Edge Sensor (TES), for direct dark matter detection. Whereas previous experiments have used TES as sensors attached to a larger target, our experiment employs the TES simultaneously as both the sensor and the target. This leaves us with a small target mass of 0.2 ng, but a low energy threshold of 0.3 eV making it sensitive to sub-MeV dark matter masses. The intrinsic energy resolution of the TES enables spectral information to be obtained without imposing assumptions about the surrounding backgrounds. Our 489-hour-long experiment sets new limits on both electron and nucleon scattering cross sections for dark matter in the MeV mass range. Finally, we discuss projections for further exploring the light dark matter parameter space using larger and more sensitive cryogenic detector setups.
