The art of science: revealing the hidden beauty of knowledge
The project
Join us in the first edition of “L’art in la Doua” a Scientific Art exhibition at the INSA Library, La Doua Campus, from February 3rd to February 28th, 2025. This event brings together the beauty of science and art, showcasing stunning visual creations from experiments, simulations, and research across various fields.
Participation is open to all members of INSA and University Lyon 1! Whether you're a student, postdoc, researcher, engineer, technician, or staff member, we encourage you to showcase the beauty of your work. You can submit entries in any major video or image format (see Submission guidelines for details). An interdisciplinary jury of artists and scientists will review all contributions, and the most outstanding works will be awarded exciting prizes (see Selection process for more info).

How to participate ?
L’Art in la Doua is open to all members of INSA and Lyon 1 University, including students, postdocs, researchers, engineers and technicians across all fields of study. Participation is free.
To participate:
-
Submit your work: You can send up to three contributions (image, video, sculpture, or 3D object) that highlight the artistic dimensions of your scientific research.
-
Provide descriptions: Each submission must include:
- A scientific description, explaining the background and technical aspects of the work, written in accessible language for non-specialists (in French or English).
- An artistic description, describing the inspiration behind your work, also written in non-technical, accessible language. (in French or English)
-
Selection process: Submissions will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary jury of scientists and artists. The selected works will be displayed at the INSA Library, and prizes will be awarded for the most exceptional contributions.
Don't miss your chance to showcase the beauty of your research and share it with a broader audience!
What is Sciart ?
Scientific art, or sciart, is where the worlds of science and art meet. It combines the precision and inquiry of science with the creativity and emotion of art, offering a powerful medium for communicating complex scientific ideas. Through sciart, researchers can transform intricate data and phenomena into visuals that are not only engaging but also accessible to a broader audience.
By merging scientific rigor with artistic expression, sciart provides a fresh perspective on research. It breaks down barriers between disciplines, making complex topics easier to grasp, while simultaneously highlighting the beauty and inspiration that exists within scientific work.
Anthropocene
This Scientific Art Exhibition is part of a larger cycle dedicated to exploring the Anthropocene, the current geological epoch in which human activity significantly influences the planet’s ecosystems and climate. In this context, sciart plays a crucial role in communicating the profound impact humans have on the Earth. By merging science and art, researchers can visually depict complex environmental changes, making these urgent issues more relatable and emotionally impactful.
Through sciart, we can bridge the gap between scientific data and public perception, encouraging a deeper understanding of the Anthropocene. The fusion of these two disciplines offers new ways to represent the interconnectedness of human actions and the natural world, inspiring reflection and, ultimately, action toward a more sustainable future.
