Early development in the little penguin: from mechanisms to consequences at individual and population levels

Within a population, individuals vary in their ability to reproduce and survive. This heterogeneity often leads to a small proportion of individuals contributing to the majority of the offspring. Although this heterogeneity has long been considered as a source of noise, it plays a key role in the study of population dynamics. Some of this heterogeneity is considered fixed, and will not change over the lifetime of the individual. Recent studies show that it is largely linked to the juvenile development, in response to the individual's genetics and conditions experienced early in life (climate and abiotic environment, parental investment, competition with brood). Thanks to a long-term colony monitoring (>20 y), the aim of my PhD will be to characterize the early development of little penguin chicks by studying their growth, to understand its causes and to examine its delayed consequences on individuals and the population.

Energy balance during spaceflight and microgravity

Reduced dietary intake and decreased body mass are common observations during space flight, suggesting alterations in the regulation of energy balance, which represents the difference between energy intake and total energy expenditure. Chronic energy deficit can exacerbate microgravity-related physiological alterations, such as muscle atrophy, cardiovascular deconditioning and impaired mood and well-being. Limited studies have investigated the regulation of energy intake and balance under microgravity conditions. The seminar aims to examine the existing understanding of this topic, crucial for the success of upcoming extended exploration missions over the next few years.
