Description

Charmed baryon polarization is not predicted by theory and is a necessary input for the measurement of the charmed baryons magnetic dipole moment (MDM) which is foreseen at the LHC.  The baryons MDM measurement is based on the well-known physics principle of spin precession, with an extra technical challenge due to the very short lifetime of charmed baryons. This challenge is faced by exploiting the bending crystals technology which has been successfully used to measure the MDM of the sigma baryon. The extension of this technique to the charmed baryons will be briefly introduced.

Baryon’s polarization has been measured for strange ($\Lambda$) and beauty ($\Lambda^0_b$) baryons in different colliding systems, however, no measurement exists for charmed baryons as of today. In this seminar, the measurement of $\Lambda^+_c $ polarization produced in pp collisions at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV using the LHCb detector will be discussed. The polarization is extracted by means of a five-dimensional amplitude analysis of the three-body decay $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow pK^-\pi^+$. The results of the $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow pK^-\pi^+ $ amplitude analysis will be used to measure the polarization of $\Lambda^+_c $ baryons produced in proton gas (pNe) collisions at LHCb; this measurement will also be discussed.
