Description
Polarizabilities are fundamental quantities characterizing the nucleon and are measured by means of Compton scattering of real photons. If instead a virtual photon is used, the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon can be measured. The reaction in the latter case is called Virtual Compton Scattering. There are six Generalized Polarizabilities which are functions of the photon four-momentum transfer squared. Only measuring double polarization observables, like the beam-recoil polarization, it is possible to disentangle all the generalized polarizabilities. The first experiment in this direction was performed at MAMI, where a new combination of generalized polarizabilities of the proton is measured for the first time.
