Exploring Physics Beyond the Standard Model with the NA62 Experiment

Description

Physics at energy scales as high as few 100 TeV can be probed by measuring the branching fraction of the ultra-rare decay K+ → \pi+ \nu \bar{\nu}.

This measurement is experimentally challenging: the decay has a branching fraction of the order of $10^{-10}$ and its final sate is made of only one charged pion. The NA62 experiment at CERN has been designed to measure this branching ratio with a precision equivalent to the one of the SM prediction (~10%). To reach this goal, innovative experimental techniques, in particular for low-mass 4D tracking, were developed. The seminar will present the experimental setup, with emphasis on these new technologies, as well as the analysis of the data taken in 2015 and 2016.
