Description
Abstract: The instability of the proton is a crucial prediction of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) and the long-lasting search for proton decay makes it possible to constrain such models. In this Talk, we review the main properties and challenges of GUT models. Special emphasis is made on the SU(5) unification with and without SUSY. We then describe the major aspects on the proton lifetime in such theories. We also address the question how discrete symmetries can have a role to make the proton stable.
