Before becoming a research and education center, "Les Cordeliers" was originally a religious monastery, inhabited by Franciscan monks since the 13th Century. During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled and the place became famous for hosting the "Society for human and citizen rights", and the Club des Cordeliers, comprising renowned French revolutionary names like Danton, Desmoulins, Hébert, Marat among many others. They used to hold meetings open to all citizens and to make appreciated speeches about politics and human rights.

"Les Cordeliers" now hosts the Faculty of Medicine, from the Université Pierre & Marie Curie, and its grounds belong to the City of Paris.
Today, "Les Cordeliers" are a peaceful place in the Quartier Latin, close to numerous museums and other touristic attractions, and well connected to any part of Paris via the underground ("metro") and local trains (RER).
