CERN's BE-CO Hardware and Timing section has been using an Open Source Hardware (OSHW) paradigm for the design, procurement and support of electronic modules for two years. The talk will start with an introduction to OSHW including its definition, our reasons to adopt it and the benefits we have experienced. It will also cover legal and commercial considerations. In particular, I will give an overview of available Open Hardware licensing options and will describe the different roles companies can play. Finally, several projects from the Open Hardware Repository (www.ohwr.org) will be used to illustrate this paradigm.
