Description
The startup of the LHC opens many new frontiers in precision flavour
physics, in particular expanding the field of precision time-dependent
CP violation measurements to the Bs system, as well as allowing precise
time dependent CP violation measurements in two body charm decays. Both
of these are critical ingredients of any model independent New Physics
search, and hold the possibility of an unambiguous discovery of physics
beyond the Standard Model. In order to fully exploit the LHC's statistical
reach, however, it will be necessary to achieve an excellent control of
the backgrounds and systematic effects associated with performing these
measurements at a hadron collider, particularly in the presence of multiple
overlapping proton-proton interactions. This seminar will discuss the
status of the time-dependent CP violation measurements in both Bs and D0
decays at LHCb, the LHC's dedicated heavy flavour experiment. A particular
focus of the talk will be the design of efficient triggers for these
decay modes in the environment of the LHC, and the procedures for a data
driven evaluation of the associated trigger biases which is critical to
reducing the systematic error on the CP violation measurements themselves.
