The initial stages of high energy hadronic or nuclear collisions

In this talk, I will discuss the early stages of heavy ion collisions from the point of view of QCD. I will first present a factorization result that applies to inclusive observables in the regime of high gluon density. Then, I will show that some novel correlations between the gluons produced in the collision can arise in this regime. Finally, I will discuss some recent ideas on how the system formed in such a collision may evolve towards local thermal equilibrium.
