Description

iRIS positions Research Infrastructures as testbeds and innovation engines for the green and digital transitions . Motivated by the Future Circular Collider and the Einstein Telescope, this project aims at demonstrating AI-powered environmental technologies and sustainability-by-design across the infrastructure lifecycle. Its relevance extends beyond fundamental-science RIs: AI approaches for particle accelerator design and optimisation can improve resource efficiency in industrial plants. AI-powered real-time materials characterisation and separation can accelerate circular construction and recycling. The soil reconstitution pilots advance land restoration and ecosystem service recovery. These technological demonstrations are integrated with a harmonised socio-economic sustainability appraisal combining lifecycle and cost-benefit approaches to support evidence-based investment decisions . Outreach, training and open tools strengthen European skills, industrial uptake and societal trust. By federating the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and integrating with the RAISE efforts towards AI driven infrastructures for science, iRIS ensures that European sustainability concepts, indicators and policy frameworks are integrated from the outset, enhancing replicability, relevance of policy feedback to the EC, and establishing a European reference model for sustainable design and operation of research infrastructures.
