Description
The adoption of AI is accelerating and its ecological impacts are soaring, despite tremendous improvements of technologies efficiency. Indeed, such improvements have historically consistently led to increased usage and thus overall impacts of AI technologies. Yet, frugality of AI is a major preoccupation, e.g. at the national (AFNOR reference document), and European (AI act) levels. In this context, how to include frugality in an AI project ? As a first step, practical approaches exist to assess the various impacts of a AI project, from data collection to model use. Then, methodologies can be adopted to effectively reduce those impacts: looking for alternatives, good practices. While frugal AI is a necessary pathway, it still shows limits regarding systemic effects.
