Description

Until very recently, weather forecasting almost only relied on solving physical equations using numerical solvers called numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. Modelling the atmosphere faster and at higher precision was made possible thanks to access to more computing power through the evolution of High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters.
The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), more specifically neural networks, changed the game. 2022 marked an important milestone with the development of AI models emulating the whole atmosphere, thanks to the huge amount of simulation data available. These data-driven models have improved constantly since, showing very competitive scores against the state-of-the-art of operational global models, consuming ten to hundred times less energy during their lifecycle. Developing these AI models alongside NWP ones is thus crucial for weather forecast centers on the road to faster and more accurate weather predictions.
