The Canadian Astronomy Data Center: an Independent Data Access Centre for the LSST

The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) collects data from Canada’s observatories, and archives and distributes those data, both in the raw form and as science-ready data products. The CADC also operates the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research CANFAR, which provides a user-driven science platform where astronomers can process and share their data. Together, the CADC and CANFAR provide a set of common tools, which facilitates the management and processing of large and heterogeneous data sets. The CADC is developing a LSST Independent Data Access Center (IDAC). The CADC will provide researchers with access to LSST data products, tools for large-scale data processing and analysis. Specifically, the CADC will host the coadded images and the ObjectLite catalog. The CADC will make 3000 cores available to the LSST community for processing via the CANFAR. The CADC will also provide 2PB so that users can store and share their results. In addition, when the LSST becomes public, the CADC will make a second set of these resources available to the general astronomical community.

Stephen Gwyn is the Science Lead of the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC). After getting his Ph.D. in 2001, Stephen was a post-doctoral fellow at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille and the University of Victoria before joining the CADC. Initially Stephen worked as a data specialist, working on data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, supporting projects large and small, including the flyby of Pluto and Arrokoth by the New Horizons space probe and the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey. Joining the CADC’s management team in 2018, Stephen's current roles include acting as the project lead for the CADC’s involvement in both Euclid and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
