Description
The DESIR low-energy beam facility is dedicated to nuclear physics, astrophysics, and fundamental interaction studies using exotic nuclei provided by the SPIRAL1 and S3 production sites. The DESIR building was delivered in October 2025. Since, general safety and building utilities are being integrated in order to allow the operation of the facility. Transport beam lines from the production sites to the experimental hall are installed in parallel. The safety licensing request is about to be submitted. First commissioning experiments with radioactive ion beams are foreseen by 2029.
The high-resolution mass-separator (HRS) commissioned at LP2iB is expected to be delivered to DESIR by mid-2027. It will be associated to a high-acceptance RFQ cooler under construction at LPC Caen, which off-line commissioning will start early in 2027. At LP2iB, the performances of the double Penning trap (PIPERADE) coupled to a RFQ cooler and buncher (GPIB) are continuously improved offline. There transfer to DESIR is foreseen by the end of 2027. The construction of the DESIR identification station has started at LP2iB and the conception of a MR-ToF-MS (TRAMWAY) will start by the end of the year at GANIL and LPC Caen.
The first permanent experimental setups to be operated at DESIR will be MORA, currently installed at JYFL, and LINO which has recently been moved from IJCLab to DESIR. A number of other permanent and temporary setups are being and will be developed in the near future. A DESIR LoI workshop held at GANIL this spring will allow proposing to the GANIL management a physics program to start with, supported by radioactive ion beam developments expected at SPIRAL1 and S3-LEB.
