Local Information

Getting to Singapore

The workshop runs 13–17 July 2026.

Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity from the date of your departure from Singapore. Singapore grants visa-free entry to most European, North American, and Australasian passport holders. Attendees from other regions should check the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore website for requirements. Information on prohibited items can be found here.

All visitors must complete the SG Arrival Card within two days prior to arrival. It is a short form with no fee, and can be completed upon arrival before proceeding through immigration.

The main international gateway is Changi Airport (SIN), on the eastern edge of the island, with frequent direct connections to most major cities.

Getting to the Venue

The conference venue is the Coriander Room, Shaw Foundation Alumni House, 11 Kent Ridge Drive, Singapore 119244 (map).

Option 1 — From Kent Ridge MRT (CC24, Circle Line)

Take the free NUS campus shuttle bus from the stop outside Exit A. Services A1, A2, or D2 all stop near Shaw Foundation Alumni House; alight at the Opp NUSS stop on Kent Ridge Drive, from which the venue is a short walk. Real-time arrivals are available via the uNivUS app (iOS) / uNivUS app (Android). Guests can use the bus and maps features without logging in.

The venue is also reachable on foot from Kent Ridge MRT in approximately 24 minutes, though this is not recommended in July heat and humidity.

Option 2 — From Haw Par Villa MRT (CC25, Circle Line)

Haw Par Villa is the next stop along the Circle Line towards HarbourFront from Kent Ridge, and can be a faster option for reaching the venue. From Exit A, cross to the bus stop opposite the station (stop 16011) and take any non-express bus (services 10, 30, 51, 143, 183, 188, or 200). Alight at Opp Heng Mui Keng Terrace (stop 16061), cross the road, walk down Heng Mui Keng Terrace, turn left into Kent Ridge Drive, and Shaw Foundation Alumni House is approximately a 5-minute walk on the right.

This option is particularly convenient for those staying at Travelodge Harbourfront, as HarbourFront MRT is four stops from Haw Par Villa rather than five from Kent Ridge.

Accommodation

We recommend staying in the One-North / Buona Vista or Harbourfront/West Coast Road areas, which are well connected to campus and have plenty of dining options nearby. Short-term accommodation in Singapore is regulated, so platforms like Airbnb do not offer private home-stays — stick to hotels and aparthotels. Have a look on booking.com etc.

Park Avenue Rochester ($$$)

The Park Avenue Rochester is a 4-star hotel in the One-North / Buona Vista area, a short bus ride from campus and close to Buona Vista MRT. Rochester Mall and Star Vista Mall have several restaurants nearby; Holland Village (one MRT stop north) has a lively atmosphere with a wide range of bars and restaurants.

Lyf One-North ($$)

Lyf One-North is a studio-style aparthotel (breakfast not included) close to One-North MRT. Timbre+ at One-North is nearby and offers affordable food and live music.

Travelodge Harbourfront ($$)

Travelodge Harbourfront is a well-located mid-range hotel at 50 Telok Blangah Road, a 5-minute walk from HarbourFront MRT station on the Circle Line (orange). VivoCity shopping mall is directly opposite, with a wide range of dining options. From HarbourFront, it is five stops on the Circle Line to Kent Ridge, taking around 11 minutes.

Other options near the venue

Staying closer to the city centre is possible but makes the daily commute to the venue considerably longer (around 45 minutes or more). If you do, aim to stay near the East-West (green) or North-East (purple) MRT lines, which connect to the Circle Line (orange) for Kent Ridge station.

Getting Around

Public transport

Singapore's public transport system is excellent and inexpensive. You can pay with a contactless credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay as you tap in and out.

  • MRT (Metro): The most efficient way to get around. Lines are identified by name and colour — the full map is available here. The nearest stop to the venue is Kent Ridge on the Circle Line (orange). There is an interchange at Buona Vista with the East-West Line (green), which connects to the city centre and Changi Airport. New stops extending the Circle Line are due to improve the connection of NUS to the city centre by the workshop dates.  Contactless payment is accepted; tap in and tap out.
  • Bus: Flag the bus at the stop by sticking out your hand; contactless payment is accepted; tap on at the front and tap off at the back. Google Maps gives reliable routes and schedules.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: The Grab, Zig, and Gojek apps offer metered or fixed-fare rides and are generally the most convenient option. ComfortDelgro cabs (blue or yellow) can be hailed from the street and paid via the Zig app.

From Changi Airport

  • MRT: The East-West Line (green) runs from the airport to Buona Vista, with a change at Tanah Merah. The total journey is just over an hour.
  • Taxi / ride-hailing: Faster than the MRT. Expect approximately S$25–45 to accommodation near NUS depending on time of day and traffic. Each terminal has both a taxi rank and a dedicated ride-hailing pickup area.

Practicalities

Currency and payments

The local currency is the Singapore Dollar; as of June 2026, 1 SGD  ~€0.67. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants. However, many hawker centre and cafeteria food stalls are cash-only, so it is worth having some on hand. Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs throughout the city.

SIM cards and data

Tourist SIMs and eSIMs are available from providers such as Singtel and M1, and can be picked up at Changi Airport. Airalo is a convenient eSIM alternative for short stays.

A few tips

  • English is the working language in Singapore.
  • There is no tipping culture.
  • July is hot and humid; pack accordingly. Occasional showers are possible even outside the main rainy season.
  • Power sockets are Type G (three rectangular prongs, same as the UK and Ireland). You may need an adapter.
  • On busy escalators, stand on the left and pass on the right. Traffic drives on the left.
  • At hawker centres and food courts, return your tray to the designated drop-off point.
