Description

In this talk, I will revisit the seminal work of Cardy, focusing on his argument regarding how modular invariance implies the universal asymptotic behavior of the high-energy spectrum in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with generic central charge c. I will begin with a review of the original Cardy formula, and introduce a more rigorous version proven by Mukhametzhanov and Zhiboedov using Tauberian theory. I will then discuss 2D CFTs with central charges c>1. Here, I will present a newly formulated Cardy-like entropy formula, specifically applicable to the CFT spectrum in a high-energy, fixed-twist regime. I will comment on the connection of this formula with the physics of near-extremal BTZ black holes in the context of three-dimensional pure gravity. The talk is based on arxiv:2307.02587.
