In the leading paradigm of modern cosmology, dark matter (DM) is made of hypothetical, yet undetected particles. Ultra-sensitive, low-background detectors currently operate deep underground searching for signals of non-relativistic DM-nucleus or DM-electron scattering events -- a search strategy referred to as DM direct detection. In this talk, I review theoretical motivations and expectations for the DM direct detection technique, focusing on a selection of DM particle candidates. Particular emphasis will be placed on the interdisciplinary character of the field, where astrophysics, particle physics, nuclear physics and solid state physics play, in different ways, an important role.
