Description

Workshop organized by the collaboration GDR RESANET Working Group 1

Motivation and purposes

The workshop will gather experimentalists and theorists, with the aim of outlining nuclear structure and reaction challenges for the coming years at the drip line. This meeting plans to focus on well-defined key questions and delineate initiatives (experimentally and theoretically) to provide quantitative answers to them. This effort, started already within the French community, is supposed to be followed by an interface with colleagues from other countries.

Some of the most important open questions in nuclear physics include a deep understanding of nuclear systems under extreme conditions of neutron-proton asymmetry, excitation energy, deformation, spin, etc.. The appearance of multiple-alpha and multiple-nucleon (np, nn, pp, 4n, etc.) clustering phenomena in stable and exotic nuclei, at below, around and above separation thresholds up to the continuum, is significantly challenging the nuclear physics community. Such efforts have been recently extended also to the case of in-medium structure in dilute, hot and N/Z-asymmetric nuclear systems, relevant to the properties of astrophysical objects (neutron stars, supernovae explosions, etc.).

During the meeting, the participants will focus on specific key questions to be answered. These include, for example, questions such as those related to a deep understanding of the difference between clustering and correlations, the actual existence of long-lived nn and pp emitters, the inner nature of Hoyle states in alpha-conjugate nuclei and their neutron-rich isotopes, to quote a few. Due to the common interest by different groups, specific investigations performed with direct reactions as well as with heavy-ion collisions will be discussed together during the sessions of the workshop.

Structure of the workshop

The workshop will be composed of rather short presentations and will leave ample time for discussions in order to encourage new ideas, methods, collaborations and the strengthening of synergies between communities which usually not necessarily work together. This workshop intends as well to better define the roadmap of the physics at the drip line in France in the forthcoming years. A summary of the achievements and future plans will be prepared by the organizers after the workshop.

Proposed speakers

The proposed speakers are composed of experimentalists and theoreticians from France and abroad working in the field of structure and reaction.
