Description
This talk will focus on the process of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) of pions at Jefferson Lab (JLab) energies (6 GeV electrons at present, 11 GeV in the future). Particular emphasis will be given to the dependence of cross sections and spin asymmetries on the transverse momentum of the pions relative to the momentum transfer vector, and the potential of this information to learn about the flavor and spin dependance of transverse momentum of quarks within the nucleon. The importance of measurements of all three pion flavors on both proton and neutron targets (both polarized and unpolarized) over a wide range of Q2 and x with full angular coverage will be emphasized, as well the the importance of measuring R (the ratio of longitudinal to transverse response) in SIDIS. First results from JLab with 6 GeV electrons already hint at some interesting results.
