Fukihiko Suekane (Tohoku Univ., Japan / APC laboratory, France): Sterile Neutrino Experiment JSNS^2: The direct test of the LSND anomaly.
In the standard model of elementary particles, the number of neutrino
flavors is 3. However, there are experimental indications that require
4th neutrino, called "sterile neutrino". Among such experiments, LSND
experiment showed the most significant indication. The LSND experiment
observed excess of nu_e in nu_mu beam from muon decay at rest. If it is
due to neutrino oscillation, the observed Dm^2 is inconsistent with the
three flavor neutrino oscillations and it requires the sterile neutrino.
However, this result has not been considered as definite one and it has
been thought that the definite test is necessary.
In order to test the LSND experiment directly, JSNS^2 experiment is
being prepared at J-PARC in Japan. The JSNS^2 experiment uses the same
decay at rest neutrino and the same neutrino detection mechanism as were
used in the LSND experiment. Yet, S/N is much better using the pulsed
beam and Gd-loaded liquid scintillator.
In this talk, I will describe the neutrino oscillations and sterile
neutrino anomalies from the basics and explain about the JSNS^2
experiment.
