Description
Collective phenomena are observed in biological systems at all scales, from bacterial systems to sheep herds. Provided that the biological system consists of independent units without a central control system, we can expect the observed collective behavior to emerge from simple rules among the interacting units. I will show that such a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics approach allows to explain two very different biological systems at two very different scales: the formation of moving clusters in myxobacteria and density waves in sheep herds.
