A rich physics program is being pursued in the CMS experiment using heavy ion collisions at the LHC. Three types of collisions are being studied: proton-proton, proton-lead and lead-lead collisions. We will focus on two families of probes, both produced at the early times of the collisions: electroweak bosons and quarkonia (bottomonia in particular). W and Z bosons do not interact strongly with the medium, and their leptonic decays provide important medium-blind probes of the initial state of the collisions. On the other hand, quarkonia travel through the medium, mapping its evolution, and being sensitive to both hot and cold nuclear matter effects.
