Description
High energy collisions of atomic nuclei are investigated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In such collisions nuclear matter is excited to energy densities achieved before only within the first few microseconds after the big bang. The experiments at RHIC have shown that under these conditions a hot and dense phase of matter is produced which is best described as a nearly perfect fluid of strongly interacting constituents. In particular, measurements of electromagnetic probes and the products of initial hard parton scattering processes are powerful tools to investigate the properties of this elusive medium produced at RHIC. A selection of current results will be discussed.
