Description
I will discuss probes of the intergalactic medium measuring some of the largest scale structures in the extragalactic universe. The Lyman-alpha forest along the line-of-sight to background quasars is measured providing a new kind of survey. The BOSS survey (as part of SDSS-III) has probed more than 90,000 Gigaparsecs in path length. We have made the first measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations on 150 Megaparsec scales to probe the expansion of the universe during the 1st half of its history (z > 2). I will discuss the future of such surveys: an extension to lower redshift using carbon forest absorption, improved measurements of the Lyman-alpha from eBOSS, and further developments till 2023 with DESI and WEAVE.
