The extragalactic background light (EBL) encodes the history of photon production and galaxy evolution since the epoch of reionization. Above an energy threshold, gamma rays interact with the optical and infrared photons that dominate the EBL, allowing to probe the content and structure of the Universe. In this talk, we present results from current-generation gamma-ray instruments and explore the potential of the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). We highlight CTAO’s ability to place new constraints on diffuse emissions from exotic processes, such as axion-like particles, as well as to measure the local Hubble constant H₀.
