Description

GW250114 is the loudest gravitational-wave signal observed to date. Its ringdown is best described by more than one quasi-normal mode: both the fundamental mode and its first overtone are resolved, and their frequencies and damping times agree with the Kerr prediction for the remnant. Comparing the horizon area of the final black hole, inferred from the ringdown, with those of the two initial black holes, inferred from the inspiral, provides an observational test of Hawking’s area theorem. I will discuss the methods behind these measurements and what they tell us about the final black hole.
