Description
First joint DAP/DEDIP/DPhP seminar

Extragalactic astrophysics is rapidly progressing towards deeper surveys over increasingly large sky areas, and near complete coverage of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Among these developments, radio astronomers are in an esp. privileged position as observational capabilities are experiencing a transformative leap in discovery potential thanks to a new generation of both array and single-dish telescopes with unprecedented sensitivity and mapping capabilities.

In my talk I will describe a few examples of how radio observations - in concert with other multi-wavelength facilities - are already shaping our understanding of some of the most consequential galaxy evolution processes: from dust-obscured starburst activity and super-massive black hole growth at the centres of galaxies, to the exchange of material between galaxies and their cosmic surroundings, both during extended periods of steady-state growth and episodic merger events.

Soon data flowing from next-generation radio telescopes like the SKA will further increase our ability to reconstruct how galaxy evolutionary paths vary all across the cosmic web, and to unravel the associated astrophysical processes both from a phenomenological and theoretical perspective. I will mention related future avenues of research, and also highlight a couple of the associated challenges.
