Description
Observing high-redshift galaxies within the first billion years of the Universe is one of the main frontiers in extragalactic astronomy. Since the discovery, a decade ago, of the first astrophysical object at a redshift above 6, spectacular progress has been made in assembling large samples of high-redshift objects. I will provide an overview of the methods used to search high-redshift galaxies and of our current knowledge of the physical properties of galaxies and of the ionization state of the Universe at z >~ 7. I will discuss future prospects and challenges with the missions and telescopes planned for the next decade.
