Emerging collectivity and shape coexistence in atomic nuclei

Description

Atomic nuclei are self-organizing many-body quantum systems that can manifest both single-particle and collective excitations. This talk will examine how collective excitations in nuclei develop away from closed shells based on insights gained from electromagnetic observables, especially magnetic moments. The nature of “precollective” nuclei will be discussed. In some parts of the nuclear landscape emerging collectivity occurs alongside shape coexistence, the region around 40Ca being a primary example. The possibility that similar shape coexistence might occur in 100Sn and possible implications for the nuclear moments of neighboring nuclei will be explored.
