Our current understanding of the Universe's history, based on the standard models of particle physics and cosmology, can successfully reproduce a wide variety of experimental results. Key issues like the nature of dark matter (DM) or the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) need new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), with most solutions invoking the existence of new particle degrees of freedom in the early Universe. Studying the dynamics of those BSM particles throughout cosmological history involves intricate Thermal Field Theory (TFT) computations, with the quantity of interest being the equilibration rate of the particle. In this thesis, we focus on the computation of the equilibration rates of particles, using the case of the axion (a popular DM candidate) as a common thread. To properly describe the physics, we also need to account for the presence of the medium where the production takes place. In a first part, we focus on computing the rate for hard momenta (of the order of the temperature). We define three leading-order equivalent schemes for describing the medium. The computation method can be generalized to an arbitrary model, which allowed us to create the AutoTherm code which performs such tasks automatically. In a second part, we compute the rate at soft momenta, focusing on the axion specifically as the computation is not model-independent anymore. This, along with lattice results from the literature, allows us to update results relevant for axion phenomenology.
