Description

NuMass, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the grant application

So, you want to apply for an ERC grant? ERC grants are really special: they are awarded to individual researchers, who are free to move with them. They provide substantial funding and prestige, and therefore the application process is long, difficult, and highly competitive. But not impossible!

I was recently awarded an ERC Starting Grant enabling my group to develop detection techniques for Project 8, a next-generation experiment aiming to directly measure the absolute neutrino mass using the tritium endpoint method. By developing and scaling Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES)—a novel, non-destructive technique for measuring the energy spectrum of decay electrons—we are working toward the sensitivity required to probe the neutrino mass at an unprecedented level. Following the first neutrino mass upper limit extracted using CRES, our current focus is on extending the technique to the large detector volumes needed for the final experiment.

In addition to describing my research activity and goals, I will walk through my personal experience with the ERC Starting Grant application—from writing the first sentence of the proposal to the last round of interviews.
