Description
Recent results from Galactic surveys, such as Gaia, and from hydrodynamical cold dark matter simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies have shown that the galactic dark matter halo likely deviates from spherical symmetry. Its shape and orientation may constitute an additional significant source of uncertainty for indirect dark matter searches. In this work we develop a fast and light computational tool that accommodates different analytical density profiles, triaxial halo shapes and arbitrary halo orientations, and predicts the corresponding gamma-ray flux maps as observed from Earth. We explore the parameter space of a triaxial Galactic dark matter halo with the aim of assessing which configurations are degenerate with, or clearly distinguishable from, the spherical case. The comparison is carried out at the level of the projected two-dimensional gamma-ray flux map of the inner Galactic region rather than at the level of the three-dimensional density distribution, taking into account the sensitivity of the Fermi-LAT telescope as well as the presence of Galactic diffuse emission.
