Description

"High-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes, particularly REBCO conductors, are promising for high-field and high energy density magnets due to their high critical current density and strong mechanical properties. However, their evaluation is often limited to standard measurements at 77 K under self-field conditions (e.g., Tapestar), which do not fully represent their mechanical and electrical performance in high-field, low-temperature environments.

In this study, four recent REBCO coated conductors {THEVA (TV), Shanghai Superconductor Technology (SST), Faraday Factory Japan (FFJ), and Fujikura (FJK)} were comparatively assessed with respect to their suitability for HTS insert applications. Mechanical properties, including delamination resistance and windability, were evaluated during a metal-as-insulation (MI) winding process, while electrical performance was characterized through critical current measurements at 4.2 K under external magnetic fields and joint resistance tests at 77 K.

REBCO double pancake coils and three mock-up magnets (TV, SST, FJK) were successfully fabricated and tested. The FFJ tape could not be used due to severe deformation during winding. The results highlight key differences in conductor behavior and provide practical criteria for HTS insert conductor selection."
