Description

PC4 of the PEPR SupraFusion focuses of the development of a superconducting magnet capable of reaching operating conditions compatible with the requirements of nuclear fusion reactor, using High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) REBCO tapes. The primary design objectives for this demonstator are to achieve a peak field of 20 T on the HTS conductor and to reach a stored magnetic energy of 100 MJ. For strategic reasons, a racetrack coil configuration has been selected for this magnet, in stead of the more common Princeton-D layout. This poster presents the progress achieved in the conceptual magnetic design of the device. A non-linear optimization program is formulated to identify the desired magnet solution and solved using a local, gradient-based optimizer implemented in C++. This conceptual magnetic study yields a family of potential 20 T - 100 MJ racetrack solutions that then need to be evaluated for their mechanical charactersitics and their quench behavior. Eventually, the current iteration of the detailed magnetic design is also presented accompagnied with the results of the associated field calculations.
