Description
Rare FCNC $B$ decays provide sensitive probes of flavor physics in the Standard Model and the search of New Physics. They also serve as complementary constraints of specific New Physics models with respect to direct searches at collider experiments. The construction of effective theories serves as the appropriate theoretical tool in order to systematically disentangle effects due to the largely separated scales involved in these decays. It allows for a model-independent description of physics at the electroweak scale with the help of the $\Delta B = 1$ effective theory which will be explained in more detail for decays mediated at the partonic level by $b \to s \gamma$ and $b \to s \bar{l}l$. The status of the current Standard Model predictions will be given and furthermore examples of the sensitivity to New Physics discussed in view of current and future experiments.
