Description

Very Heavy and Super Heavy nuclei, which form the upper end of the chart of nuclei, owe their stability, and for the heaviest systems their sheer existence, to the delicate interplay between the repulsive Coulomb interaction between the many protons of the nucleus and the strong nuclear interaction, which binds the nucleons together. The study of the heaviest nuclei is not only an experimental challenge (due to low production cross sections involved), but it is also a theoretical one. Indeed, the combination of large Coulomb fields and high densities of single-particle states makes theoretical calculations difficult and leads to extreme model dependencies, such as for example the localisation of the borders of stability and the so-called “island of stability”. The latest discovered elements have production cross-sections which are extremely small and the identification of a handful of events requires long irradiation times (many months). Luckily, equally important information on the structure of Super Heavy nuclei can come from the study of lighter deformed transfermium (Z~ 100-106). In this talk, recent results on the structure of No nuclei obtained from two decay spectroscopy experiments will be presented and discussed.
