Description

The GRAiNITA is a novel calorimeter design based on a mixture of sub-millimeter inorganic scintillating crystals, suspended in dense, transparent liquid. This innovative approach is expected to achieve excellent energy resolution at a fraction of the cost of conventional technologies.
To evaluate the energy reconstruction performance of GRAiNITA, a middle-sized 16-channel prototype, named "Troll", has been built and commissioned. The preliminary energy resolution can be estimated from the simulation samples. However, the determination of the constant term requires experimental inputs, in particular the photon-electron yield efficiency across the detector volume. A dedicated test beam campaign was carried out at CERN in June 2024 to measure the photon-electron yield efficiency and construct the uniformity map, which served as essential inputs to the simulation-based energy resolution studies. The test bench included two pairs of dual scintillators for triggering, a wire chamber for beam-track reconstruction, and the middle-sized GRAiNITA prototype, "Troll", instrumented with a Timepix tracker for high-precision trajectory measurement. The resulting data were then combined with the GRAiNITA simulation, with the designed size of prototype, validating an energy resolution of $1\%\sqrt{E}$.
