LiteBIRD is a space-based mission with the main aim of probing cosmic inflation through the study of CMB polarization. It will target primordial B-modes, in order to set an upper limit on the uncertainty on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r at delta(r) < 0.001. To achieve this LiteBIRD will observe the microwave sky from the lagrangian point L2 in 15 frequency bands from 34 GHz to 448 GHz, with total sensitivity of 2.16 uK-arcmin and with an angular resolution of 0.5deg at 100 GHz (FWHM). The project is currently in its design phase and the launch is planned to be in the late 2020s. It is led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), that selected LiteBIRD as a large-class (L-class) mission in 2019, and it is also supported by many countries in Europe (among which France), by the US and Canada. During this seminar I will give an overview of the LiteBIRD mission, its design and scientific requirements. I will focus on the unique role that LiteBIRD will play among the next-generation CMB experiments and the main challenges that LiteBIRD will face to achieve its scientific goal.
