Hunting the Sources of Astrophysical Neutrinos with IceCube

Description

With the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in 2013, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory opened up a new window to the Universe. However, after more than a decade of observations, the origin of most of these astrophysical neutrinos remains a mystery. Recently, IceCube reported their second candidate neutrino source, the galaxy NGC 1068; a result which I will cover in this seminar. Moreover, I will present an IceCube search for high-energy neutrinos from ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). These are the most luminous infrared sources in the Universe, with infrared luminosities more than 100 times larger than that of the Milky Way. The results and implications of this search for astrophysical neutrinos from ULIRGs, regarding NGC 1068 in particular, will be discussed in detail. Finally, I will shortly give an overview of the future prospects for neutrino astronomy, and how it will shape the field over the coming decades.
