Most open problems in particle physics are, directly or indirectly, related to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, which has not been unveiled experimentally sofar. The LHC has been designed to clarify this problem. At the start of the LHC, we review the physics of the Higgs sector in the standard model and beyond.
