Description
I will review very quickly the various virtualization techniques used in computer science mainly from a historical perspective and including the most recent advances. Later I will present a number of possible roles of these techniques for HEP software and computing such as its role in the vertical application deployment, in the emerging cloud computing paradigm, etc. I will finish with the status of the R&D project in virtualization we are executing at CERN.
